    <title>Keratocytes — Wishing Harvard Taught Fishing</title>

My sister works with fish. She spends a large part of her time slashing
around in a fish tank trying to catch the lab pets. I figure that her
Harvard degree makes her one of the world’s better educated bare-hand
      fishers.

    <description>
I flew out to visit Erin and Rick in California. They’re both going to
Stanford, Erin for a PhD and Rick for an MD. Since Stanford is only
about forty minutes from San Fransisco, we had to go and see the Golden
      Gate Bridge.

<p>I can sometimes make rather foolish decisions. Luckily, I
sometimes get a second chance. One recent second chance led
to a great St Patrick’s Day and following Saturday.</p>

<p>I’ll continue trying to live a bit better each day.</p>

<p>Great wines to enjoy along the way include:</p>

    <title>Paintings by Tarah</title>

alt="Logo of Belize Foundation for Conservation" />
<p>My friend Tarah Rowse stopped by for a visit recently. Well,
she’s currently working for the Peace Corps in Belize, so
it’s not as easy as just stopping by. But she was in the
States for a while and down in the DC area to deal with some
unpleasant business. But I was glad to get some time to hang out
with a cool Greenwichian. We had a good time sampling beer from
all over the world at the Brickskeller. Except Belikin from
Belize, which is not on the menu. (I recently got a package from
Tarah: one bottle each of Belikin lager and stout.) While Tarah
was here she showed me the logo at right she designed for the
Peace Corps project she works on. Its symbology is rather
appropriate when one considers that Tarah teaches about nature
            conservation and likes frogs.</p>

<p>My parents are coming for a visit tomorrow. I’ve
also been hearing a rap remix of Bruce Hornsby’s
<cite>The Way It Is</cite>. So, here I am, listening to
the same albums my father used to blast when I was a
young boy. Those were good times.</p>

<p class="description">Last week Greg, Eddie, and I went to Colorado Springs for a radar training course. We went out a few days before the course to give us time to sample the nightlife in Denver, do some skiing, and see a few sights. I learned a lot at the course, but I think everyone would rather read about the fun stuff and see some of our pictures from the trip. So, I’ll save the technical musings for later.</p>

<title>Writing Mixed Data With MATLAB</title>
<link>http://francisbarnhart.com/blog/2005/01/19/matlab_pain/</link>

<p class="description">Today I found myself learning more about MATLAB. It wasn’t a very pleasant experience. Especially considering my experience in Python. I needed a way to first store data about ballistic missile trajectories and then write it to a CSV file for later use. The data consisted of a mix of string and numeric types. I thought this would be easy enough. Instead, I now know why most of the CSV files I’ve seen output from MATLAB only contain numerical data.</p>

<p class="description">Today after work Greg and I went sailing. One of the older guys
we work with has been kind enough, in addition to mentoring young
engineers, to let us sail his boats on the Potomac. This evening
he gave a quick tutorial on how to sail a catamaran and turned us
    lose.<p>

    <a class="external" href="http://shuttlecockrecords.com/">Shuttlecock Records</a>.
He’s just getting started. So, if you
know anyone near Port Washington on Long Island looking to get a great
deal on recording, you’d better have them call ASAP. Now’s the time
to get an amazing rate. He also has <a class="external" href="http://shuttlecockstudios.com/media.html">samples</a> on his media page.</p>
