Finally! Email at my domain and IMAP.
I finally got sick of sitting around and thinking, "Gee, it'd be nice if I had an email address at francisbarnhart.com." So, I set it up.
It really doesn't get any easier than this, with FreeBSD:
- Edit a few text files for Sendmail;
- Install an IMAP port from the ports collection;
- Follow the prompts to generate a self signed certificate;
- Setup Mozilla to talk to the IMAP server and setup some folders and filters.
That's it. Now I've solved that problem I've been having trying to keep my email straight between my Windows and FreeBSD machines. See, IMAP keeps all my mail on the server, organized in the folders that I've defined with Mozilla. Excellent. Plus, I'm using SSL so my password isn't sent in plaintext over the Internet. And even the encrypted information doesn't travel far. Just between the router and computers on my desk.
This was so simple that I feel stupid talking about it.
Now, I'll probably get hacked.
Reverse (and perverse) capitalism
I've recently started pondering the way that large corporations and alliances are seeking to mess with my beloved capitalist system in new ways. They want to dictate to the customer what to buy. They force you to buy their product on their terms. And, if you do not, they charge you for media because they assume you are stealing their product. Think about that. It's sorta like taxation without representation.
Needless to say, I was happy to come across this essay that covers many of my concerns. It is well worth a read through, or at least a skim.
